Get the right ebook reader.

When you download ebooks online you need to make sure you also get the ebook reader that matches its format. Most people on most computers will have a reasonably recent version of MS Word, a web-browser like MS Explorer or Firefox, Adobe Acrobat Reader or a plain text editor like Notepad. You will find that the vast majority of free ebooks online use one of those as their ebook reader. All of those programs will enable you to read downloaded ebooks in ‘doc’, ‘html’, ‘pdf’ and ‘txt’ formats. Downloaded ebooks in other formats will require you to download extra ebook reader software. These might be free ebooks or ones that you have to pay for; however, the ebook reader software is invariably free to download - but access to it might be restricted until you have gone through the procedure to download ebooks in that format.

As far back as the 1990s Apple were promoting one of the first PDAs, called the Apple Newton. Even back then the potential for using a small hand-held device for reading text from was apparent. Today, many downloaded ebooks are intended to be read on PDAs as if the owner were holding a book, rather than viewing the ebook on a computer or laptop screen. Special PDA ebook readers have been developed to make the pages of downloaded ebooks legible to PDA users. The three most common ebook readers for PDAs are probably - Mobipocket, MS Reader and Palm Reader.
